Two Tones

One the easiest combinations is that of the two tones. There’s a precision and starkness in the dearth of color. The black/navy suit and tie paired with a white dress shirt evokes a certain seriousness of a situation or the wearer himself. It’s often a nice backdrop to the more fanciful designs of womenswear. It’s also an easy, fool-proof go-to.

Suit: John Varvatos; Shirt: Dolce & Gabbana; Tie: Polo RL; Shoes: Magnanni. Vintage collar bar, unbranded pocket square

Now, it’s certainly fun to pair patterns together, to be inspired by art or nature and let that be the driving force behind an ensemble, however, sometimes restraint can be equally as stylish.

Suit: Burberry London; Shirt: Custom A.M Bespoke; Tie: Charvet; Cufflinks: Kent Wang; Specs: Tom Ford; Watch: Bulova

This same idea works just as well, if not better, with a dark navy suit and solid navy tie. Navy being a touch more versatile and less severe than black. While black is acceptable for the evening, it can come across a bit intense during an 11 a.m. board meeting, whereas navy would not.
